Island residents welcome Tory commitment on immigration.

Island residents overwhelmingly back Michael Howard’s policy on immigration. This was the message that came over loud and clear during a major survey canvassing exercise undertaken yesterday.

A Conservative team led by Gordon Henderson visited hundreds of homes in Minster, on the Isle of Sheppey, and asked people a range of questions relating to local issues, including:-

The only question relating to national issues was “Do you agree with Michael Howard’s policy to restrict immigration”, to which 100% of those asked said they did agree!

Gordon said:

‘I was delighted that sixteen members of parliament, and their assistants, were able to join us to survey canvass parts of Minster. It was a really worthwhile exercise that has given me a terrific insight into what concerns local residents.

‘To be honest I am not surprised at the response to our questions, particularly those dealing with local issues, such as whether the Richard Montgomery should be blown up, or, left where it is. When we explained to people that blowing up the ship, or even moving it, would entail evacuating half the Island for up to 46 weeks, they were incredulous. They recognised immediately that such a move would effectively destroy Sheppey as we know it. All the shops would be lost. Industry would have to close. And ships would not be able to use the Sheerness Docks. They are simply not viable options, which is why such a high proportion said the Richard Montgomery should be left where it is.

‘The one issue that surprised me slightly was the overwhelming support for Michael Howard’s policy on immigration. I had expected some criticism and opposition, but not a single person said they disagreed with the policy. Even those few people who said they were going to vote Labour at the next General Election supported Michael’s initiative and said that something had to be done to bring immigration under control.’
