IBF SCOTTISH OPEN JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS

I.B.F JUDO INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.
THE
BARONY COLLEGE
PARKGATE
The 5th annual International Budo Federation
and Scottish Sombo Federation open Judo and Sombo Wrestling
championships were held at the weekend at the Barony College Parkgate,
there were over 140 entries from all parts of the UK and also entries from
Holland, USA and Ireland, fighting started just after 10am and lasted till 5
o’clock in the afternoon with a half hour break at one for lunch. A much
larger entry than last year and many new faces and first timers to Scotland.
There were two mat areas for fighting and the juniors started first on mat A
followed by the Sombo Wrestling on mat B seniors. The junior Judo went well with
most of the local clubs picking up their fair share of the medals
including Closeburn Judo Club, Castle-Douglas Judo Club, and the Kobayashi-Kwai
Judo Club from Carlisle. In the senior Judo there were many exciting fight some
going the full 4 minutes ending in referee’s decisions being made. The Sombo
wrestling was equally as good having 4 players from the British World
Championships team from last year's World Championships in Krasnoyarsk,Siberia.
After A really good British open this year and so soon after it in May there was
a lot of interest about the Sombo and it is becoming a fast growing grappling
sport with a few people trying Sombo for the first time at the tournament.
Guests of honour for the day were Martin Clarke 8th
Dan IJF World Masters Judo Champion 2001, Joe Docherty 6th Dan Judo,
3rd Dan Jiu-Jitsu and John Black 4th Dan Jiu-Jitsu
president of the Scottish Go-Shin-Jutsu-Ryu.

made the day a great success including the staff from the college who took care
of us.
Most instructors and coaches remarked on how well the
day went and say that they will be back next year. Everyone seemed to have a
good day and the medals and trophies went to all parts of the UK as well as
Abroad.
