Gordon raises alarm over illegal travellers

Gordon Henderson has written to the Chief Executive of Swale Borough Council and asked him to take immediate enforcement action to stop land opposite Upchurch Golf Course being developed without planning permission.

Gordon said:

‘I understand that this land was bought by travellers some time ago and that Swale Borough Council officers have been monitoring the situation for the past year to ensure no illegal development takes place.

‘Now it looks as if work has started on laying out hard-standings and at the rate work is progressing the site will be ready to take caravans in the very near future.

‘If anyone else started carrying out building works of this kind without planning permission, then council enforcement officers would soon put a stop to it. That is why I have written to Chris Edwards and raised the alarm.

‘I very much hope that immediate enforcement action is taken to prevent any travellers camping illegally on the outskirts of Upchurch. The whole village is up in arms about this and we want something done and done now.

‘This sort of activity is taking place the length and breadth of the country. It is an absolute scandal that travellers can simply buy land and then develop it without planning permission and seemingly with impunity. It is time for somebody to make a stand and it might as well be us.’

…ends…
