Gordon makes public apology to MP

Gordon Henderson has issued a public apology to Derek Wyatt. The apology follows publication of a letter, sent by Mr Wyatt to the residents of Upchurch, in which he complained about not having been invited to the public meeting to discuss the unauthorised travellers’ site which has sprung up in Oak Lane, Upchurch. The meeting is due to be held on Tuesday 25th January.

Gordon said:

‘I was asked to chair this public meeting so I suppose it’s my fault Mr Wyatt was not invited. I would like to apologise publicly to him for that oversight, however, I assure him that no sleight was intended.

‘The problem was that events unfolded rapidly after we discovered work taking place on the site the weekend before last. When I asked Cllrs Gerry Lewin and John Wright, as the ward councillors, to call a meeting and arrange for council officers to be present, I simply did not think to make sure that Mr Wyatt was invited. That was an oversight on my part for which I apologise unreservedly.

‘The public meeting has been called to allow local people to express their views and is totally non-political, so I would be delighted if Mr Wyatt, as our local MP, comes along to lend his support to our campaign. If we are to solve this problem, then we must have the collective political will to change the law to ensure that travellers cannot simply set up camp on any land they choose and then put in retrospective planning applications. It is simply not fair that we appear to have one planning law for travellers and another for local people.’

…ends…
