Gordon calls for immediate abolition of Assembly

Gordon Henderson has called for the immediate abolition of the South East England Regional Assembly.

Gordon’s call comes in the week the Assembly sent out an opinion survey form from which Sheppey had been “air brushed” out.

Gordon said:

‘Enough is enough. This unelected body is becoming too big for its own boots. What is its purpose? Who needs this over expensive white elephant except for Tony Blair and John Prescott? Islanders certainly don’t need it, because it’s patently obvious that the Regional Assembly doesn’t even know Sheppey exists!

‘It is quite scandalous that almost £4 million of taxpayers’ money was spent this year on an over blown talking shop that nobody voted for and nobody wants. I wonder how many people know that the Assembly’s wage bill this year was £1.57 million pounds and that “members” of the Assembly claimed £68,000 in expenses.

‘The only people in the whole country to be asked if they want a regional assembly were the people of the North East and they rejected the idea by a large majority. Why on earth is the Government trying to impose another tier of politicians on us by the back door? I think the Assembly should be scrapped immediately and all its powers transferred back to democratically elected borough and county councils.’

…ends…
