DOES SHEPPEY WANT A NEW SCHOOL SYSTEM?
Gordon Henderson, who is the local Conservative Prospective
Parliamentary Candidate, has promised parents that he will fight any
reorganisation of Sheppey’s schools that does not lead to a better education for
the Island’s children.
Mr Henderson made the pledge in advance of proposals that will be put out for
public consultation by Kent County Council in the near future.
Mr Henderson said:
‘Following meetings with senior Kent county councillors and a number of head
teachers from Sheppey schools over the past few weeks, I have become
increasingly concerned that education officers have already made up their minds
that Sheppey should revert to a two tier system.
‘I fear that officers have been unduly influenced by certain local Labour
politicians, including our Member of Parliament, Derek Wyatt, who has been
campaigning for years to destroy Sheppey’s current three tier system.
‘My own position is that although I am a great supporter of our middle schools,
and will take a great deal of convincing that they should be abolished, I will
not pre-judge any proposals that the education authority might bring forward.
‘I have three grandchildren at school on Sheppey and their future education is
at stake. Because of that I will consider the proposals, take part in the public
consultation that follows and only then make up my mind.
‘However, I warn Kent County Council and our local MP, here and now; unless I am
convinced any proposed re-organisation will lead to a better education for the
children on Sheppey, including that of my own granddaughters, then I will fight
tooth and nail to protect them and their future.’
