Call for regional council tax.
Gordon Henderson has greeted with dismay news that Labour and Liberal Democrat MP’s have called for a new regional council tax.
The recommendation was included in a report on the Draft Regional Assemblies Bill issued by the Parliamentary Select Committee that monitors the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
Gordon said:
‘We need a regional council tax about as much as we need an elected regional council. What people tend to forget is that we already have an unelected South East of England Regional Assembly, which sits in Guildford and costs us £3 million a year.
‘ There is simply no public appetite for yet another layer of politicians and bureaucrats, so heaven alone knows why these MP’s feel the need to increase even further the burden on the poor old tax payer!
‘We have seen our council tax increase by 70% since 1997. Now we find that Labour and Liberal Democrat MP’s are in favour of an even greater tax burden for hard working families in our community.
‘Don’t they understand that people are fed up with high taxes and too many politicians; they want lower taxes and fewer politicians, which is why I welcome news that Michael Howard has pledged to reduce the number of MP’s if he becomes Prime Minister.’
