My Opinion on the General Election plus Gordon continues the fight.

Dear Editor

This latest Election threw up a lot of interesting facts which I would like to ask our politicians but first can I congratulate the Tory candidate Gordon Henderson for nearly kicking our invisible MP Derek Wyatt in to touch (Rugby terminology) I hope he does not give up the fight to become our MP. I very much doubt if this government will last the full 5 years already the true Labour wing of the party, which according to the papers our MP Derek Wyatt to his credit is one of them, is ready to battle with Tony Blair and his side of the Labour party.

Some interesting facts for our new MP to take to the House of Commons

1)      More people in England voted Conservative then Labour, so because of the Scots and Welsh we have a labour government. Yet the Scots and the Welsh have forms of parliament so when will the English be represented with their own Parliament?

2)      With Tony Blair getting in with the worst percentage vote of all time it does not say a great deal about democracy, with most people saying that they cannot make a difference and their vote not counting question 1 is an example.

3)      I hate to admit it but I have to agree with the LibDems that some of Proportional representation voting must be introduced so we do not end up with an elected dictatorship remember Germany elected Hitler into power

4)      Postal voting must be thrown out as it seems to be utterly corrupt, mind you our whole electoral system is a joke, when voting no one asks for ID, we still tick little bits of paper something we have done for hundreds of years. I opted for postal voting yet I still got a polling card, my brother was the same but he done even better he got a polling card for his present house, polling card for my mother’s old house and one for his house in Paddock Wood and our Democratic system used to be the envy of the World yet another thing in this country that makes us third rate.

5)      Surely the only way forward is to have compulsory voting as we all have a duty in how our country is run, vote on a Sunday which is more convenient for every one or make Polling day a holiday. Also in this day of chip technology how difficult is to issue a swipe card to every voter when vote we swipe the card and within 20 minutes after the Polling Station have closed we will have an accurate result, instead we have the ridiculous situation where counting goes on till 4 am with three different result and I expect if they counted again there would be yet another result. Why didn’t the returning officer ask for the recount in the morning when everyone was fresh? It has happened in other constituencies.

One final thing, which amazed me, was that in Gordon Henderson we had one of the most Euro Sceptical candidates there is and yet UKIP still put forward a candidate

(You may remember they said they would not stand against any euro sceptics of any party) So by UKIP standing they let in a party who believes in complete European integration, a forerunner of a United States of Europe. Surely UKIP are the true LOONY PARTY and to think a few years ago I seriously considered joining them thank god Andrew Bowles and Gordon Henderson convinced me other wise. To top it all according to Newspaper reports the UKIP candidate did not even turn up for his 900 odd votes, maybe he at the last moment realised is was a Judas.

At the end of the day I was quite cheered that the Conservative Party done so well especially in the County elections and hopefully Parliament will get the majority of people back voting and participating in the political system.

Martin Clarke

Gordon Henderson, has welcomed calls by the AA for an increase in the motorway speed limit.

Gordon said,

‘I have been calling for a review of speed limits on Britain’s roads for a number of years, because I believe that the present blanket speed limit on motorways of 70 mph is totally illogical.

‘Drivers are currently allowed to travel at 70 mph even in the poorest weather conditions and when motorways are busy. Yet technically, drivers are breaking the law if they travel above 70 mph even when the weather is perfect and the road is empty!

‘I would like to see an increase in the motorway speed limit to at least 80mph, preferably as part of a variable speed system that would allow higher speeds in good conditions and enforce lower speeds during bad weather and when roads are congested.

‘At the same time I would like to see a clamp down on drivers who break the speed limit in residential areas and see a speed limit of 20mph introduced near schools and hospitals.

Gordon promises to continue supporting Sheppey parents.

Gordon Henderson, who came within a whisker of winning the recent General Election, has promised Sheppey parents that he will continue to support their campaign for a proper consultation about the reorganisation of education on the Island.

Gordon said,

‘Because I didn’t quite make it at the election, I don’t want Sheppey parents to think that I will abandon them. I still believe they have a genuine complaint about the way they were treated by Education officers, who have undertaken no meaningful consultation with Islanders.

‘At some time in the future another proposal will come forward from the Education Authority. I want to assure Islanders that I will continue to be at the forefront of the campaign to ensure that any proposal is subject to the widest possible scrutiny and that Sheppey’s parents are properly consulted.

‘I have one overriding ambition and that is to ensure Islanders decide the future of our education system and not Education officers and politicians who do not live on Sheppey.

‘If my critics and political opponents thought that had seen the back of me; they can think again!’
